Police in Florida coordinated with a Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission trapper to relocate a massive alligator that wandered “too close to some homes.” While alligators are often linked to Florida, Louisiana is home to more than any other state, with an estimated population above three million, according to the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries. On average, male alligators reach 11.2 feet and weigh 795 pounds, using figures from the Georgia Department of Natural Resources. Exceptionally large specimens can measure up to 14 feet and weigh around 1,000 pounds, per Smithsonian’s National Zoo. The largest Louisiana alligator ever recorded—though unverified—was shot on Marsh Island in 1890.
