Inside Out | Looking for Lincoln in Champaign County
As Halloween approaches, “Looking for Lincoln” once again turns Abraham Lincoln into a local scavenger hunt across Champaign County. The area features nine wayside interpretive signs produced by the Looking for Lincoln Heritage Coalition, which coordinates the 43-county Abraham Lincoln National Heritage Area under the National Park Service. The signs are placed at specific sites tied to Lincoln’s time in the community, including near the county courthouse, by Busey Bank in Urbana, and around the police station in Champaign near the Cattle Bank. Other panels cover Lincoln’s stops and routes—such as Fort Clark/Road via Great Western Railroad connections—plus visits like Kelley's Tavern, the Ohio or Nine-Gal Tavern, and a final stop in Tolono before his departure to Washington, D.C.
