Iran-linked hackers reportedly took a UK power plant offline for the first time, multiple British outlets said, citing an incident believed to have occurred in July but only recently disclosed. The Telegraph and Financial Times reported it was the first time Iranian-linked groups shut down such a facility in the country, and it involved programmable logic controllers, or PLCs—the control computers used across energy, water, manufacturing, and even hospitals, chemical plants, elevators, trains, prisons, traffic systems and fire suppression. Separately, the same month, Iranian-linked attackers were believed to have targeted water systems in a dozen US states, forcing operators offline and causing pressure loss and flooding. The UK’s National Cyber Security Centre did not confirm or deny.
