Jacksonville officer-involved shooting: New video and information released

Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office (JSO) released new video and details about an officer-involved shooting on Kline Road on June 7. JSO identified the suspect as Kiyan Atkinson, who the agency says is transitioning from female to male. According to authorities, officers shot Atkinson after he allegedly pointed a gun at them and fired during a domestic dispute call. Officers were dispatched at 5:58 p.m., spoke with the suspect’s grandparents, and later located Atkinson inside a shed on the property. JSO says Atkinson argued loudly, repeatedly reached toward his jacket pocket, and at one point ran toward the street while pointing his gun. Officers deployed a taser, then Atkinson fired a round; officers Iezzi and Lenn returned fire, striking Atkinson multiple times. The State Attorney’s Office will review legality, with JSO conducting an internal review; conclusions are pending. Atkinson was transported in critical condition and faces aggravated assault on a person 65 or older and three counts of attempted murder of a law enforcement officer.
