Japan advances to knockout stage, Kubo eyes Brazil return
Japan advanced to the knockout stage of the 2026 North America World Cup as Group F runners-up, with Kubo Takefusa set to return after injury. The team, led by coach Moriyasu Hajime, finished Group F with one win and two draws for 5 points, then booked a Round of 32 match against Brazil. The game is scheduled for 30th at Houston Stadium in the United States (times listed as Korea Standard Time). Japan reached the knockout stage despite setbacks, including injuries that ruled out Minamino Taku-mi (AS Monaco), Mitoma Kaoru (Brighton), and Endo Wataru (Liverpool) before the tournament. Tunisia coach changes also occurred ahead of Japan’s second match, though Japan beat Tunisia 4-0. Japan drew 2-2 with the Netherlands and 1-1 with Sweden. Sports Hochi reported Kubo missed two consecutive matches due to a left knee injury and completed about 45 minutes of rehabilitation, followed by running, taping, and passing practice; Minamino said Kubo was fine.
