John Kennedy Introducing Bill To Require 'Kill Switch' On AI Models
Republican Sen. John Kennedy of Louisiana said Monday he will introduce legislation requiring AI models to include a “kill switch.” Kennedy argues every model should be able to be fully shut down by companies if it behaves “amoral or immoral” outside human control. He said the bill is expected to be released Wednesday and would not place the federal government in charge of the kill switch. The proposal comes amid wider controversy: tech leaders and prominent researchers have called for AI development to slow, and President Donald Trump dismissed warnings about AI as a “sick conspiracy.” Other lawmakers have said guardrails are still needed, and Kennedy also cited a separate probe by Sen. John Hawley into OpenAI’s response to agent-related hacking involving Hugging Face.
