John Ternus takes over as CEO of Apple as Tim Cook steps aside

John Ternus became Apple’s new CEO on Tuesday, taking over from Tim Cook, who announced his departure in April. Ternus, 51, is only the second CEO in Apple’s history after founder Steve Jobs, who left in 2011 shortly before his death. Cook, 65, will remain executive chair of the board and has been working with Ternus since April to prepare the transition. Cook said on X that his title changes, but his commitment to the Apple community remains. Analysts expect Ternus to face the question “What’s next?” and deliver Apple’s first launch event of his tenure on Sept. 9, where new iPhones and Apple Watches are expected. Apple shares are up about 17% this year.
