A new study in Environmental and Sustainability Indicators applies data-limited assessment methods to Indonesia’s snapper and grouper fisheries, which account for roughly 45% of the world’s snapper catch. Researchers analyzed 395 stocks across 43 demersal finfish species in 11 Indonesian Fisheries Management Areas and nationwide, converting results into management options with quantified biological, economic, and nutritional consequences. Led by Steven Saul, the team used an ensemble approach rather than a single model, combining five fishing-mortality estimators and biomass estimation via Catch-MSY with sensitivity scenarios. Uncertainty was carried through multiple “states of nature” by varying model choices, catch/depletion assumptions, and life history parameters from sources including FishBase and FishLife. Findings suggest fishing pressure is frequently above target reference points, with about 60% of species showing biomass below the target.
