Max Verstappen explains Belgium FP2 radio rant after gearbox issue
Max Verstappen explained the reason behind his furious Formula 1 Belgian GP FP2 radio outburst, linking it to a gearbox issue on the Red Bull RB22 at Spa. After setting the fastest time in FP1 for the first time in 2026, Verstappen said the shifting in FP2 was “unacceptable,” describing it as problematic during the early stages. He finished FP2 third and told media he is “very sensitive” to changes in the car, attributing the behavior to a software upgrade or downgrade rather than a mechanical failure. Verstappen also addressed the broader demands of Spa-Francorchamps, saying energy management and battery handling are crucial due to long straights and heavy braking. He suggested the car’s balance remains acceptable, though competitors may be quicker on the straights. Qualifying is next.
