Mexico Data Leak Probe: 12.9 Million Records Offered for Sale on Telegram

Mexico’s anti-corruption ministry is investigating an alleged data leak after a Telegram post offered more than 12.9 million personal records for sale. The Secretaría Anticorrupción y Buen Gobierno (SABG) said it detected the post dated 22 September through active monitoring and announced the inquiry on Thursday, 24 September. The seller claimed the databases were linked to call centers. A sample of 13,000 records from 13 databases reportedly contained full names, birth dates, home addresses, emails, landline and mobile numbers, and bank details, including Mexico’s RFC tax ID. Named institutions include BBVA, Banorte, Santander, HSBC, and several retailers such as Liverpool and Sears. The ministry cautioned these are indications of a possible leak and did not state how recent the data is, how it was obtained, or the price.
