Need for cash. It's DNR's free fishing, ORV and state park weekend
Michigan's Department of Natural Resources is staging a free recreation weekend on June 13-14, waiving fees for fishing, off-road vehicle use, and the Recreation Passport at state parks and boating access sites. The DNR notes that anglers can fish in-season species without a license, and ORV riders can explore more than 4,000 miles of state-designated routes and six scramble areas without an ORV license or trail permit. The free weekend is the second of two this year, following February 14-15, and the initiative highlights Michigan's emphasis on accessible outdoor recreation. Across the state, there are 103 state parks offering lodging, camping, swimming, fishing, hiking, boating and more. The DNR adds that parks range from urban-adjacent reserves to forested areas, providing options for families, hikers and water enthusiasts. From a cost perspective, normal licensing standards apply outside the waiver: fishing licenses for residents 17 and older typically range from $2 for youth to $26 for in-state residents, with $10 daily passes; ORV licenses are typically $26.25 plus a $10 trail permit, valid April 1 through March 31 of the following year. The Recreation Passport typically costs $7 or $15 for vehicles and motorcycles, with an extra $5 fee if purchased separately. The DNR emphasizes that the free weekend lowers barriers to access, supporting outdoor recreation and local tourism across Michigan.
