Ukraine Probes Teen Suspect in Cyber Theft Scheme Targeting California Online Shoppers
Ukrainian authorities identified an 18-year-old suspect from Odesa linked to an international cybercrime operation that compromised nearly 30,000 accounts for a California-based online retailer between 2024 and 2025. The scheme used infostealer malware to harvest credentials and session data, with stolen information sold through Telegram channels and online markets. At least 5,800 compromised accounts were used for unauthorized purchases totaling about $721,000, and losses exceeded $250,000, including chargebacks. The suspect allegedly managed online infrastructure and used cryptocurrency services to transact with accomplices. Searches at two residences recovered mobile phones, computers, bank cards, and data including credentials and logs; authorities did not identify the broader group or malware families involved.
