How agentic AI will transform enterprise accounting by 2027

Eighty percent of executives say agentic AI will be critical to company survival by 2027, according to a Cisco survey of 650 leaders. Yet many enterprise accounting teams still perform manual close tasks, such as downloading bank statements and reconciling data across portals. Agentic AI is not GenAI; it acts across systems to prepare work end-to-end and escalate when necessary. As a result, the month-end close is expected to become a continuous process with daily reconciliations and narrative updates. Finance teams will rely on bounded autonomy: agents prepare, humans approve, and SOX controls are architected in. Vendors should be evaluated on lineage, validations, and resilience, not demos. By 2028, a third of enterprise software may embed agentic capabilities.
