Nigerian residents protest as hundreds remain captive a month after mass kidnapping

Residents in Niger State’s north-central Borgu district protested Monday in New Bussa, demanding the release of hundreds of people they say have remained in captivity for a month after attacks on multiple communities. Demonstrators from Dekara and neighboring areas gathered at the local government headquarters, alleging around 600 abducted—mostly women, children and elderly—with some community estimates now close to 700. The protests add pressure on President Bola Tinubu’s administration ahead of January 2027 elections, despite Tinubu ordering an immediate rescue operation following the August 21 kidnappings. Niger State officials told Reuters security agencies were mobilized but the victims had not been found. Residents reported market and healthcare access has been disrupted.
