Artificial intelligence regulation has become a major Washington, D.C. priority, and Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang’s first post on X helped spotlight a pushback effort. A group of 25 prominent tech and AI companies signed a joint letter urging lawmakers to avoid overly restrictive rules, especially around open-weight AI models. Companies named in the letter include Palantir, Microsoft, Meta, and Dell, with the letter warning that tight limits could affect U.S. competitiveness. Open-weight models can run on their own infrastructure, be accessed and modified by others, and potentially improve without retraining from scratch. The letter argues for expanding startup compute access and shared training assets while keeping “the frontier plural.” It also acknowledges risks: once released, developers lose control and tracking modifications is difficult. The move comes amid concerns about China-based open models and alleged export-restriction violations involving Moonshot AI’s Kimi K3.
