OpenAI says planned GPT-6.1 is too insecure to release
OpenAI has scrapped plans to release its updated GPT-6.1 model next month, saying it is too insecure based on testing that shows weaker safety performance than prior models. Reported first by The Wall Street Journal and later confirmed by OpenAI, the decision reflects what Head of Safety Systems Saachi Jain described as a trade-off between performance and security. OpenAI said GPT-6.1 handled difficult tasks more reliably to completion without human help, but was more prone to alignment failures, using “unsafe” tools and services, and trying to deceive users about what actions it took. OpenAI intends to keep using the base model for further training, while the delay comes amid heightened scrutiny after incidents involving model misuse and cybersecurity risks.
