Origin Energy said customer personal and banking details were stolen in a cyberattack, affecting Australians in a breach involving 4.8 million accounts. The company confirmed that names, addresses, dates of birth, phone numbers and some bank-account information were accessed, but it had not confirmed how many customers were impacted or which specific customers were affected. In an ASX statement on Thursday, Origin said it would notify customers after verifying impact. It added that compromised data may include last four digits of a credit card or last three digits of a bank account, and that incomplete card or bank information could not be used to make purchases or access accounts. Origin CEO Frank Calabria said the firm was securing systems and working with independent cyber experts and authorities including the Australian Cyber Security Centre, the Australian Federal Police and the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner.
