Qatar face generational challenge after another early World Cup exit
Qatar’s generational challenge took center stage after their World Cup run ended again in the group stage, underscoring the next step for the country’s long-term football project. On June 25, Qatar drew 1-1 with Switzerland for their first World Cup point, but followed with a 6-0 loss to Canada and a 3-1 defeat to Bosnia and Herzegovina, finishing with one point from three matches. Julen Lopetegui’s side leaves the tournament early despite two decades of investment, including the Aspire Academy and recruitment of foreign-born players eligible for Qatar. Qatar’s squad averaged nearly 29 years old, with 10 of 26 players over 30, and captain Hassan Al Haydos returned at 35. The campaign, Lopetegui said, showed progress, yet highlighted a transition as Qatar prepare to rely on younger players.
