Scoping Review Maps Husserl's Explicit Role in Artificial Intelligence
A new scoping review maps how explicitly Husserl’s philosophy shapes modern AI research, finding the field is extremely small. Published in Discover Artificial Intelligence by Hendrik Poschmann and Stefania Centrone, the study searched English-language literature using a single, reproducible source query for work that materially anchors AI or robotics in Edmund Husserl’s phenomenology. From 5,594 records retrieved via the Semantic Scholar Academic Graph API on 5 December 2025, only 32 publications from 1990 to 2025 met the review’s criteria—just 0.57%. The authors argue that this gap suggests much nearby writing on machine consciousness and embodiment borrows Husserl’s vocabulary without engaging his distinctions. The review stresses that behavioral success doesn’t prove consciousness.
