“Supergirl” Falters at the Box Office, Testing DC Studios' Reboot as Warner Bros. and DC Studios face a disappointing weekend debut. The film cost $170 million to produce and tens of millions more to market, yet was estimated to earn about $38 million in the United States and Canada from Thursday through Sunday, roughly 24% below prerelease projections of $50 million. It added $30 million overseas. “Supergirl” received a “rotten” rating on Rotten Tomatoes and scored a B-minus in CinemaScore exit polls. Despite the underperformance, overall summer ticket sales in North America were up 21% year over year, with theaters expected to sell about $153.5 million in total. “Toy Story 5” led for a second straight weekend with about $70 million. “Supergirl” tested DC’s long-term script-first strategy after the successful 2024 “Superman” reboot, which generated $619 million globally and strong reviews.
