Terrier survives 2 days underground as rescuers await approval to dig in protected badger warren

A countryside walk in Nottinghamshire turned into a two-day rescue after a 6-year-old Parson Russell terrier named Cello disappeared into a badger warren. Rescuers found the dog safe, but they couldn’t dig until Natural England approved access to the protected site. Badgers are heavily protected in the UK, so disturbing burrows without authorization can bring up to six months in prison and an unlimited fine. The owner, Stephen Smith, told BBC-linked reporting that another dog on the walk helped locate where Cello went. Once the permit was granted, teams used a camera to pinpoint him and opened about a 2-foot-deep shaft to reach him.
