The Age of Jailbroken Consoles, Xbox Says the One to Mod First Wins

Xbox is leaning into the accelerating “jailbreak” and AI-assisted decompile scene by creating a new Xbox Labs division aimed at exploring “new technology,” according to announcements shared Tuesday. The move comes as modders increasingly repurpose game assets and code: examples cited range from porting Halo: Combat Evolved to iPhones, Android, and browsers to PlayStation 5 users enabling play of PS2/PS3 discs via emulation and disc piracy. Xbox has faced less heat thanks to disc-to-digital licensing for Xbox One and Xbox Series titles, but the company says decompiles are already happening. The next phase it’s eyeing is Project Helix, described as blending PC and Xbox gaming.
