The Rise of AI Email Triage: Why the Next Email Revolution Isn't About Writing
Email is evolving from a simple messaging tool into a daily triage challenge as inboxes fill with mixed work signals—client requests, notifications, newsletters, receipts, internal updates, pitches, and webinar invitations. The article argues that while generative AI can speed up drafting replies, the larger opportunity is using AI to reduce the number of emails and decisions that demand attention. It cites a 2024 Frontiers in Psychology study linking high email load to difficulty completing primary tasks due to interruptions and uncertainty. A 2025 randomized field experiment across 66 companies found generative AI cut employee email time by about two hours per week, but efficiency alone doesn’t necessarily create more meaningful work time.
