The University Of Chicago Bans AI, Other Technology, In More Courses

The University of Chicago will ban AI use in its core social science courses starting this fall, according to a Social Sciences Collegiate Division memo obtained by the Chicago Maroon. The policy aims to create an “analog” learning environment focused on students reading, writing, and thinking independently without relying on AI tools. Requirements include in-person attendance, device-free classrooms, and prohibitions on recording class discussions and lectures. Students are expected to complete assignments independently, without AI assistance, though professors may grant limited exceptions for specific tasks or thoughtful experimentation. The memo also notes that reasonable academic accommodations will be allowed if they don’t compromise learning goals. Similar restrictions were reportedly implemented in UChicago Law School first-year courses.
