Ten-year-old Liam Holland and his father, Dola, set off on the Appalachian Trail on Feb. 13 and reached the summit of Katahdin on Tuesday, finishing a 2,197-mile trek in 172 days. The Plymouth, New Hampshire family said they spent months preparing before the hike, after Liam became inspired by spotting a thru hiker at Mount Washington last summer. Vermont approved a schooling plan built around the walk, and Holland was temporarily withdrawn from school so he could learn math through mileage, budgeting and fractions, plus history and local culture. The return timetable was set for September.
