Tour guide who created Shetland's first dog park is 'absoltuely delighted' to see happy hounds running free

A ribbon-cutting event opened Shetland’s first dedicated dog park, Peerie Paws Park, in Girlsta, with Dogs Against Drugs project manager Michael Coutts officially declaring the facility open on Thursday. The launch included a demonstration by drug-detection dogs Bravo and Oscar, alongside feedback from the Shetland Times’ border collie Jessie. The park was developed by tour guide Paula Johnson over the past year, responding to demand from pet owners and navigating delays related to fencing and supplies arriving in Shetland. Johnson said online bookings opened the day before and reached about 30 in the first day, with a Yorkiepoo making the first reservation. Dogs can use the enclosed area for recall training and recreation, and a Polycrub shelter is available alongside the park. Business Gateway assisted with a business plan, and AA Fencing and Breeze Agri supported construction work at different stages.
