Update: China to promote forging of widely-accepted global AI governance system: vice president
China is set to use major AI meetings to push a widely accepted global AI governance system, according to Vice President Han Zheng. Speaking Friday at the opening ceremony of the 14th World Peace Forum in Beijing, Han said the World Artificial Intelligence Conference and High-Level Meeting on Global AI Governance will strengthen exchanges and cooperation to build the framework on broad consensus. He referenced China’s Global AI Governance Initiative, emphasizing a people-centered approach and AI developed for the good of humanity. Han also highlighted global instability, conflicts, and “governance deficits” in emerging fields like AI. He said Chinese President Xi Jinping has proposed a broader Global Governance Initiative aimed at a more just and equitable system. The vice president added that China will uphold the United Nations’ central role, and noted Beijing will host the 33rd APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting. Around 400 attendees, including former foreign officials, diplomats, and scholars, were present in the Chinese capital.
