Why Black Businesses and Nonprofits Need an AI Policy Now
Ethical AI strategist Dwayne C. Dixon argues that many Black businesses and nonprofits are already using AI, but lack shared rules to manage it safely. In “Bridging the Code,” he says AI often enters through everyday tasks—drafting grant proposals, preparing study materials, creating social media content, or reviewing job applications—without a formal strategy or major purchase. The risk, he says, is that without written boundaries, each person sets their own standards, potentially exposing client records, personnel details, and finances to public AI systems, or allowing machine-generated outputs to influence decisions without qualified review. Dixon recommends defining approved tools and tasks, restricting sensitive information, requiring knowledgeable human oversight before publication or decisions, and naming a single person responsible for monitoring.
