Year-Old Was Swimming with Friends When He Disappeared in 'Cursed' Lake. His Body Was Found Hours Later

A 21-year-old man, Terrell Shelton of Pendergrass, disappeared while swimming with friends near Robinson Park at Lake Lanier on Saturday, June 13, around 2:40 p.m. His body was found about 11:30 p.m. in roughly 14 feet of water and recovered by a remotely operated vehicle. The drowning case remains under investigation. His sister Calista Shelton has started a GoFundMe in memory of her brother. Lake Lanier spans about 690 miles of shoreline and 76 recreational areas, offering activities such as picnicking, camping, boating, swimming, hiking and fishing. The lake has recorded 203 drowning-related deaths from 1994 to Oct. 2020, and Shelton’s death is the seventh drowning this calendar year; authorities continue to investigate.
