Canadian government endorses a plan to move whales from shuttered Marineland park to US and Spain

Canada's government has endorsed a plan to relocate the last captive whales from Marineland to aquariums in the United States and Spain, a move that could avert mass euthanasia if the deal proceeds. There are 30 belugas and four dolphins remaining at Marineland in Niagara Falls, Ontario, which announced a sale in 2023 and closed to the public in late summer 2024. The transfers involve five parks—Shedd Aquarium in Chicago, Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta, SeaWorld locations in San Antonio and San Diego, Oceanogràfic Valencia—with Mystic Aquarium assisting; permits are issued under CITES, and more approvals are expected as the move nears.
