Clean energy brings electricity, jobs to African communities
xCruzo Brief
A new solar-plus-storage project in remote northwestern Zambia is creating local jobs and reliable electricity for communities near the Ruida Mine. In October 2024, Chinese firm SANY Microgrid started construction of a facility that combines solar panels, battery storage and diesel generators, reducing reliance on fossil fuel while delivering consistent power to the mine. Green, a 26-year-old orphan in Jifumpa Village, was hired for site work such as clearing land and hauling materials. SANY Microgrid says it now operates microgrid projects across Malawi, Mozambique and Zambia, with more than 60 installations for industrial parks and ports. Broader efforts referenced include off-grid solar reaching about 13 million people since 2016.
