Dem AG targets Trump on voting while his state sends rights letters to dead people
Virginia Democratic Attorney General Jay Jones launched a “Voter Protection” unit aimed at enforcing state voting-rights laws, casting it as part of efforts against voter-access erosion and in response to federal actions. Jones formed the section Tuesday as Virginia faces scrutiny over restoration letters sent to deceased felons, following Gov. Abigail Spanberger’s restoration of voting rights to more than 66,000 Virginians. Jones’ office said the unit would coordinate with state election officials and a federal accountability body. But Republicans criticized the rollout for overlooking the controversy in Jones’ own state. Several Virginians reported receiving notices addressed to deceased relatives, including a letter involving Fredericksburg resident Howard Lambert’s late daughter. Critics also pointed to Jones’ prior remarks and text messages mentioned by the Virginia GOP.
