Detroit set to have its first Black congressional representative since 2022 after McKinney primary win

Detroit is set to have its first Black member of Congress since 2022 after state Rep. Donavan McKinney defeated incumbent Shri Thanedar in the Democratic primary for the 13th Congressional District. McKinney’s victory almost assures the seat will be held by a Black representative in a district that votes heavily Democratic and includes a large portion of Detroit, described by McKinney as the “Blackest major city” in the country. He will face Republican Taras Nykoriak in November’s general election. Thanedar, seeking a third straight term, issued a message on X congratulating McKinney and offering a smooth transition.
