DoorDash to pay $131.5 million in New York worker settlement

DoorDash will pay $131.5 million to settle a New York City investigation into claims that delivery workers were underpaid or received wages late. The agreement with the city’s Department of Consumer and Worker Protection includes a $16.7 million penalty and about $115 million in relief for roughly 264,000 workers, whom DoorDash calls “Dashers.” The settlement follows an accusation made nearly eight months earlier that DoorDash and rival Uber Eats used “design tricks” to deprive workers of more than $550 million in tips. DoorDash said it expects a median payout of about $48 and blamed errors on technical bugs and incomplete banking information.
