England will ban the sale of high-caffeine energy drinks to children under 16 from April, the government said. Drinks with more than 150mg of caffeine per litre will become illegal to sell to under-16s and younger teenagers in shops, restaurants, cafes, vending machines and online. Lower-caffeine alternatives are not covered, and tea and coffee are also excluded, while popular brands such as Red Bull, Monster, Relentless and Prime would breach the limit. The measure, first proposed last year, is intended to reduce childhood obesity and prevent risks including disrupted sleep, increased anxiety and poorer concentration and school results. Public Health Minister Sharon Hodgson said the ban reflects a commitment to children’s health, and it will be subject to parliamentary approval, with enforcement by local authorities. Businesses breaking the law could face fines up to £2,500.
