Trump to attend World Cup final on Sunday: White House
The White House says President Donald Trump will attend Sunday’s World Cup final in New Jersey, after FIFA president Gianni Infantino earlier announced he would attend and present the trophy. Infantino’s June plan had not been confirmed by the White House until Leavitt said Trump’s support—Argentina or Spain—was unclear. The report notes Trump has not attended World Cup games previously, but has been involved in controversy around officiating, including confirming earlier this month that he asked Infantino to review a red card given to US striker Folarin Balogun. FIFA suspended Balogun’s one-game ban ahead of the next match versus Belgium. The final trophy presentation follows earlier debate over the Club World Cup award to Chelsea at the same New Jersey stadium, when Trump initially stayed for celebrations and later kept a replica in his office.
