Inside Iowa Politics: Why Sen. Grassley isn't sure Americans would react today like they did on September 11, 2001

Twenty-five years after Sept. 11, Iowa Sen. Chuck Grassley says he doubts Americans would respond in the same unified way today. Grassley recalled being inside the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C., during the attacks, when law enforcement evacuated members of Congress after the second plane hit the World Trade Center’s South Tower. He said he first believed the initial strike was an accident, but after the second impact, police knocked and told him to get out immediately. He also said there was no evacuation plan at the time. Grassley later sheltered at a staffer’s home while officials worked to understand events, and now points to a more divided political climate.
