Iowa’s NIL Collective, The Swarm, is pausing operations as the Hawkeyes redirect resources toward Flight Funds, an internal revenue-sharing system for student-athletes. The Swarm was originally built by CEO Brad Heinrichs to fund Iowa athletics and, in return, supporters who donated received perks such as exclusive tailgate access, meet-ups, and members-only apparel. Iowa says it can’t directly pay athletes, but it can broker NIL deals. The shift may simplify compliance with the College Sports Commission, which can approve NIL agreements above $600. By consolidating funds, Iowa’s athletic department can manage NIL, transfer-portal, recruiting, and retention under one set of guidelines.
