Ironbridge campaigners call for greater protection of River Severn

Campaigners gathered in Ironbridge on Sunday to highlight the River Severn’s importance and to press for stronger protection against pollution. Resident Helen Harvey, speaking to the BBC, said she has seen the river’s decline over the past decade, including fewer plants along the banks and less wildlife. Severn Trent said it invested £2 billion across the region in improvements over the last year and reduced storm overflow spills. Still, campaigners argued more action is needed on World Rivers Day. Anglers reported declining fish numbers, while local campaigners called for better enforcement and a “charter for the Severn” committing authorities and communities. Severn Trent also cited £140m spent on sewage treatment upgrades.
