Louisiana issues guidance on $168M teacher pay shift

Louisiana education officials issued guidance explaining how school systems must apply Gov. Jeff Landry’s $168 million shift in public school funding toward teacher and support staff compensation. The Board of Elementary and Secondary Education met briefly—about 10 minutes—before the Louisiana Department of Education sent the instructions to districts. Landry’s executive order reduced money distributed through the Minimum Foundation Program by $168 million, redirecting it through the state education department. Teachers must receive at least $2,000 more and support employees at least $1,000 more during the 2026-27 school year, either as a one-time stipend or a permanent raise. The total includes employer retirement contributions and is based on staffing levels reported in fall 2025. Districts have until May 1 to make payments and submit board minutes and updated salary schedules.
