Maine Marathon: What to know for Sunday's event in Portland

Sunday’s 35th edition of the Maine Community Bank Maine Marathon, Half Marathon and Marathon Relay will take over streets across Portland, Falmouth, Cumberland and Yarmouth, starting at 7:45 a.m. The overall field is approaching 5,500 entries, above last year’s record 5,144. Event director Bob Dunfey said growth is limited to about 400 runners per year. Organizers report the race has raised more than $8.9 million for charity, donating about 40% of revenue; last year’s donations totaled $793,285. The marathon and half marathon start and finish on Baxter Boulevard in Portland, with the course running largely out-and-back through Back Cove, Route 1 North and Route 88. Prize money totals $1,000 for top male/female/non-binary finishers in the marathon and $500 in the half.
