Meet the New York City chefs who kept Ground Zero workers fueled after the 9/11 attacks
xCruzo Brief
Chef Don Pintabona, 66, and other New York City restaurant workers formed “Operation Chefs with Spirit” to feed World Trade Center responders after the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks. In the hours following the destruction, many in the city’s hospitality community wanted to help but didn’t yet know how. Pintabona says quick organizing, thousands of New Yorkers’ generosity, and a rapid logistics effort enabled the group to deliver meals around the clock for two months. He traced his inspiration to a page he found amid debris from the towers while watching the attack from his Brooklyn home. An ABC News tribute special premieres Sept. 11 at 8 p.m. EDT.
