Mike Lee: Senate GOP must do 'hard work' to pass SAVE America Act
Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah) said Senate Republicans must put in “hard work” to pass the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) America Act, a voter ID bill President Trump has promoted as a top legislative priority. Speaking on “Fox News Sunday” with Shannon Bream, Lee argued the measure makes voting “easy” while making it “hard to cheat.” The House passed the GOP-backed bill in February, but it stalled in the Senate. Lee noted Republicans are 10 votes short of cloture, yet said there are ways to reach passage without bypassing the filibuster, including exhausting debate by staying on the floor “for weeks,” including weekends and recesses if needed. Democrats have warned the rules on proof of citizenship for registration and ID for voting could disenfranchise college students and married women and discourage voters of color. Senate Majority Leader John Thune said there are not enough votes to bypass the filibuster. Trump urged scrapping the regular filibuster and also called for reauthorizing expired Section 702, while House Republicans remain divided.
