Catastrophic floods in Nepal have left nearly 1,000 people missing, while hundreds more are believed trapped inside hydropower tunnels, according to the Independent Power Producers’ Association, Nepal. Workers are trying to clear mud from a central power station and revive a key node supplying electricity to more than 20,000 people. The floods are estimated to have taken about 700 megawatts offline—roughly 10% of the country’s power capacity—and hydropower projects were fully or partly destroyed in districts including Rasuwa, Nuwakot and Dhading. In Nepal and China combined, over 900 people have died and 4,700 are missing.
