Arizona State University hockey defenseman Matthew Mayich remains hospitalized in critical condition after suffering an exertional heat stroke during an outdoor offseason workout. The 21-year-old, who is an NHL draft pick of the St. Louis Blues, collapsed last month on the first day of coach-led training after transferring to ASU. New video footage shows a military-style, hour-long session led by an outside consultant and former Green Beret, ending with Mayich collapsing during a “wind-down” run while carrying a 10-pound medicine ball. ASU said temperatures were in the high 80s with 46–51% humidity. The university’s strength-and-conditioning staff review paperwork was not submitted. The family’s attorney alleges water was withheld and emergency cooling protocols weren’t followed, prompting an Arizona State Police investigation.
