Copper River salmon -- alarming questions???
Copper River king salmon returns, in both run size and average weight, have declined in recent years. Alaska-wide trends in king salmon have persisted since 2007, prompting renewed conservation focus. In the 2024-2025 Board of Fisheries cycle, regulators shortened commercial and personal-use seasons to protect the Copper River king resource, signaling ongoing concern about the stock's long-term health.
Under the changes, the Copper River commercial fishery may open only after May 21 by emergency order (5AAC 24.310(a)). In the Chitina District personal-use dip-net fishery, king salmon may not be taken until after June 30 (5AAC 21.310(d)(1)). The revised language underscores conservation concerns as Alaska adjusts management in response to declines.
