Iowa Lutheran school principal, coach arrested for sexual exploitation
The principal and track coach at Valley Lutheran School in Cedar Falls was arrested on May 29 on a felony charge of sexual exploitation by a school employee, highlighting ongoing safeguarding concerns in Iowa schools. Lucas Tanney, 40, led grades 6 through 12 and also coached the school's track program. Waterloo police booked him into the Black Hawk County Jail after a report of an alleged inappropriate relationship with a student. Investigators say unlawful sexual conduct occurred at Tanney's residence, and the student involved was a minor who was not identified by authorities. Tanney was arrested without incident and remains jailed on a $10,000 cash-only bond; no court filings have been reported yet.
Valley Lutheran School opened a satellite location in 2003, and authorities have not disclosed additional charges at this time. The district has not publicly commented on the case, and it remains unclear how long Tanney had authority over students in the 6th–12th grade program. The investigation continues as police review the relationships and possible policy violations. The incident raises questions about safeguarding procedures at faith-based schools in Iowa and how administrators are vetted before and during employment.
