Karditsa, often called Greece's Cycling Capital, is redefining urban life by placing bicycles at the center of daily mobility. The city reports more than 30,000 bicycles—roughly equal to its number of passenger cars—and this cycling culture spans every generation, from toddlers to seniors. To sustain this model, the municipality is rolling out a broad restoration of cycling infrastructure. The program includes sidewalk reconstruction along routes, rebuilt wheelchair ramps, tactile paving for the visually impaired, improved lighting, clearer signage, and new greenery. World Bicycle Day events precede June 3, highlighting a culture of cycling among residents. As Karditsa expands its network, officials say car usage can be minimized, allowing cycling to remain the dominant transport in a city that already benefits from a naturally flat terrain and a long-standing commitment to sustainable mobility.
