Pull an all-nighter? How parents, schools, fans and police plan to cope with England's 1am kick-off - AOL
England’s 1am BST World Cup round-of-16 kick-off is pushing parents, schools, fans and police to prepare for a late finish, potentially around 3am, and possibly 4am if the match goes to extra time and penalties. After England reached the last 16, the national focus shifted from football nerves to how to manage the live schedule at night. The debate intensified when manager Thomas Tuchel encouraged parents to allow children to miss school for the Mexico game, arguing the World Cup comes every four years. Education secretary Bridget Phillipson said it’s a late match but children can still attend school the next day. Some schools are allowing later arrivals, while others may screen a replay at 7am, with final decisions left to headteachers. Alcohol licensing also matters, with pubs able to serve only until 2am.
