School zone speed cameras returning across Chatham County
xCruzo Brief
School zone speed cameras are back across Chatham County as students return to class. The Savannah Police Department (SPD) reactivated its cameras on Monday, Aug. 3, issuing warnings for the first two weeks before citations begin Aug. 17. Cameras operate 45 minutes before school starts, stay on through the school day, and shut off 30 minutes after dismissal. Chatham County Police Department (CCPD) had temporarily paused cameras earlier due to new Georgia House Bill 651 requirements that took effect July 1, but later reversed course and said both county cameras will remain active. CCPD Chief Jeff Hadley said cameras cut speeding by about 95% to 96% and noted the state law requires DOT relicensing and voter approval by July 1, 2027.
